Moxa Discloses Company Net-zero Targets Validated by SBTi

Dec 19, 2024

  • Corporate News

Taipei, Taiwan, December 19, 2024—Moxa Inc., a leader in industrial communications and networking, announced that its net-zero targets have been verified by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). This validation fortifies Moxa’s alignment with the Paris Agreement and their commitment to supporting global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The company’s decarbonization plan outlines a 90% reduction on its 2022 baseline in both Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions (including electricity consumption) by 2050, along with a 97% reduction in Scope 3 emissions (from purchased goods and services, waste management, and the end-of-life treatment of sold products) also by 2050. To drive this energy transition, Moxa has set near-term targets for 2034, aiming for a 60% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 65% reduction in absolute Scope 3 emissions.

To reach its net-zero emission goals, Moxa has identified three key sources of carbon emissions—purchased goods and services, use of sold products, and electricity consumption—and used these to focus its strategies for decarbonization across three pillars: Low-carbon Operations, Low-carbon Product Design, and Low-carbon Value Chain.

Strategy 1: Low-carbon Operations

Electricity consumption is the primary source of Moxa’s carbon emissions. By working with external experts in carbon emissions, Moxa has monitored energy-consuming equipment in their manufacturing plants and offices for regular assessment of energy efficiency and to analyze the characteristics and energy consumption of high-energy-consuming equipment. This is used to make adjustments and improvements to optimize energy efficiency and replace outdated equipment.

Moxa has already taken progressive steps to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, as demonstrated by its Taoyuan City, Taiwan manufacturing facility: a Green Building certified facility designed for energy efficiency from its planning stages to its implementation. By incorporating high-efficiency energy-saving systems and abundant natural lighting, a total energy savings of 110,316 kWh and a carbon reduction of 54.6 tons CO2e was achieved for 2023. These design choices lay a solid foundation for Moxa’s low-carbon operations and further enhance operational sustainability.

Strategy 2: Low-carbon Product Design

Moxa places low-carbon product development at the forefront of its efforts to empower customers’ decarbonization journeys while enhancing market competitiveness. Modular product design plays a crucial role in enabling Moxa to provide low-carbon products that can also assist customers in reducing their carbon footprint. By introducing high-performance power modules that exceed industry-average efficiency standards, Moxa’s new line of UPort USB-to-Serial converters reduce energy consumption by up to 67% under comparable usage conditions. Modular design also adds value to Moxa’s next-generation product portfolios by providing improved flexibility, maintainability, and product lifespan for customers.

In addition to modular product design, Moxa has invested resources in optimizing packaging materials and packaging volumes through Design for Lean principles. In 2023, Moxa successfully optimized packaging and shipping efficiency for some of its most popular products by reducing packaging materials by 45% and the carbon emissions per package by 52-56%. These lighter, more compact designs lower shipping frequency and weight, reducing carbon emissions generated from transporting these products by 51-56%. Moxa’s innovations demonstrate its commitment to sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact across its value chain.

Strategy 3: Low-carbon Value Chain

As a global industrial IoT leader, Moxa is committed to empowering its supply chain partners in their low-carbon transitions. In 2023, Moxa assisted all its subcontractors in completing third-party-verified greenhouse gas inventories. In 2024, Moxa expanded these efforts to high-carbon-emission suppliers, providing guidance on emissions tracking and reduction. Moving forward, Moxa will require supply chain partners to set and implement their own carbon reduction targets, fostering collective progress toward 2050 net-zero emissions for all.

A Collaborative Path to a Sustainable Future

In the face of global climate challenges, Moxa is dedicated to leveraging its leadership in industrial communication to unite stakeholders across the value chain. Through its focused strategies—Low-Carbon Operations, Low-Carbon Product Design, and Low-Carbon Value Chain—Moxa showcases its unwavering commitment to driving meaningful carbon reduction and promoting sustainability.

In 2024, Moxa published its sustainability report, offering transparent insights into its practices and achievements. By working hand-in-hand with customers and supply chain partners, Moxa is building a resilient, low-carbon economy and paving the way for a net-zero future. Together, we can create a sustainable world for generations to come.
